How do I update iOS on my iPhone?

You can update your iPhone’s iOS in three ways—automatically, manually, or using a computer. Your data and settings remain safe during the update.

Update Automatically #

To enable automatic updates:
Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates, then turn on Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates.
Your iPhone will download and install updates overnight when charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You’ll get a notification before installation.

Update Manually #

To check for updates at any time:
Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
If an update is available, tap Download and Install.

Update Using a Computer #

  • On a Mac (macOS 10.15 or later): Open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar, click General, then click Check for Update.
  • On a Mac (macOS 10.14 or earlier) or Windows PC: Open iTunes, click the iPhone icon, go to Summary, and click Check for Update. Make sure iTunes is up to date.

Before updating, it’s a good idea to back up your iPhone automatically or manually.
